Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
                     May 2005
In spite of the nasty spring snow storm, a large number of members,
guests and musicians turned out to listen, dance and play at the club’s
jam session on April 24th.

The session started when all the musicians came forward to play a
couple of warm-up numbers that included “Ain’t Misbehavin;” and
“Rosetta”.

After that, separate sets were formed in a traditional trad jazz
configuration of six or seven players consisting of a front line and a
rhythm section.  The front line musicians were: Dick Ross and Bill
Smith trumpet; Al Kinney, cornet and vocals; Aid Harsch, Mike
Kovach and Barrett Taylor on reeds; Jim Hronek, Denny Smith, Dave
Bair and Bruce Lehtinen.  The rhythm section players: On piano --
Bob Boston, Jeanne Arrendale and Bill Parthe.  Banjo: Bill Parthe,
Cecil Rankin, Russ Mortus, and Ron Benach. Bass: Lew Kunkel and
Ron Benach. Drums: Rich Fawcett, Joe Popchuk and new member
Jerry Sanders.  Vocalists were Lydia Hug (Star of Navarre) and
Richard Starr, EARLYJAS trustee.

Some of the songs were “Avalon”, “Shanty Town”, “Margie”, and
“Bourbon Street Parade”.  Al Kinney sang and played “Sugar Blues”
made famous by Clyde McCoy.

Cathy, the personable Legion cook, had a nice assortment of food and
creatively titled the menu with Dixieland themes.

Eileen Freeze won the 50-50 raffle.  Ron Benach won the American
Rag subscription.
