Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
June 2005
A good-sized crowd turned out for club concert on May 22, 2005.  They were treated
to an entertaining performance by the New Orleans Stompers.  In introducing the band,
leader and banjoist Dick Mills said that the Stompers have played in various venues
around the Cleveland area for over 20 years.
There have been a few personnel changes over the years.  The current front line consists of  Al Kinney, cornet
and vocals; Doc Seymour, reeds; and Jim Hronek, trombone.  In the rhythm are Jim Drain, piano; Bill Fuller,
drums; Fritz Kuenzel, tuba; and Dick Mills on banjo.

Although often the closing number for many groups, the Stompers opened with “The Saints”.  Also, unlike some
groups that seem to think that “loud and fast” is better, the Stompers varied their repertoire and included slower
tempos for the dancers.  There were also up tempo selections for the “Jitterbugs”.

Some of the played were “Float Me Down The River", "Radio", "Rosetta", "In the Mood" and "Christmastime in
New Orleans".

Everyone was pleased to welcome back Judd and Jacki Pecek who have completed their move back from the
West Coast.  To the delight of the audience, Judd was prevailed upon (with little urging!) to deliver his
exhilarating vocal on “Auntie Skinner’s Chicken Dinner”.

The afternoon closed with a colorful parasol parade led by Charlotte Reid.  The 50-50 raffle turned out to be a
family affair with Charley Shaeffer getting the money and Judy Shaeffer winning the American Rag Subscription.

A long overdue Thank You to all of you loyal supporters of OKOM. As musicians, we often fail to recognize as
frequently as we should the tremendous support provided by your frequent attendance at so many events where
we perform. Not only does it make it more enjoyable for us to have an audience, but for those restaurants and
facilities that do provide a venue for us, it reinforces their willingness to continue providing the venue. Month
after month we see many regular faces as well as new faces enthusiastically supporting we musicians as we do our
thing.

As the costs of dining out and travel increase, we know it becomes more difficult to justify monthly attendance at
various events and this makes it even more important that we acknowledge your loyalty and support.  So, once
again, on behalf of my fellow musicians, a great big THANK YOU and appreciate your continued support.
