The clubs' first event of the New Year, on Sunday January 30th was a resounding success. The weather
was sunny and dry, and the change of venue to the American Legion hall in Hudson met with everyone's'
approval. The building is new, modern and clean. One section is private, for Post members only, while the
other section is the spacious meeting room.
It was gratifying to see such a large number of members and guests, so many that more tables had to be
set up. There was a bar and limited food service available. Even with a large crowd there is ample space for
dancers.
Adding to the successful event was the appearance of the Chuck Taylor and the Dixie Squids. At first
glance they appeared to be a group of high school kids. Unlike most trad groups there was nary a bald head
or grey hair. After the first note was played you knew they were a group of experienced Pros. In fact you're
not likely to hear much better in the "Big Easy".
The Squids were formed in 1996 by a group of students at the University of Toledo. The players are now
all in their mid "20's" which would explain their youthful appearance and ability to keep up their high-energy,
enthusiastic 3 hour performance.
Band members include: Dave Kosmyna - leader, cornet and vocals. He also plays with the Climax Jazz
Band in Toronto. Bill Hayes - piano, Erik Hertz ‑ clarinet, Ben Herrick - trombone, vocals, Jjuipos Place -
tuba, Brian Vogt - drums, and Jennifer Terry - banjo and vocals. She was especially entertaining with an
appealing presence and vocal ability to go from "lilting" to hot blues.
When asked who Chuck Taylor was and what he played, we were informed that the name came from the
Chuck Taylor Converse All-Star shoes they all wore.
The band had a steady gig at Ragtime Ricks’ in Toledo until it closed. This will continue when Ricks’ new
location opens.
Some of their tunes were Amazing Grace, I’m Confessin’, Working Man Blues, and Big Butter and Egg
Man". They closed with Show Me the Way to Go Home.
It's encouraging to see young people playing and enjoying "OKOM".
Lydia Hug won the 50-50 raffle and Gale Gorrell won the free subscription to the American Rag .
Our Fall Festival ticket sales are off and running. On Sunday, Bruce Gordon purchased the first patron ticket.
