Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
October 2007
The weather cooperated with a beautiful sunny fall day for the
Clubs' annual memorial concert, Sunday Oct. 28th.  The main
attraction,  however, was the appearance of the always
popular Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers from Dayton.
They drew a large appreciative crowd that were amply
rewarded by a great performance.
The Stompers often have a unique front line that differs from the usual trumpet, trombone,
and clarinet combination. For our event, the Stompers used a trumpet and two reed
combination and it was very effective. The two reed players alternated on clarinet,
soprano, C-melody and tenor saxophones.
In addition to leader Dave on banjo, tenor guitar and vocals there was Chris Moore,
trumpet; Erik Greiffenhagen and Greg Dearth, reeds; Ted Desplantes, piano; John
Macqueen, bass; and Jim Leslie, drums and vocals.
The bands' repertoire is endless and some of their numbers were
"My Blue Heaven", "Kansas City Man Blues", "Baby Brown" and "Singin’ the Blues". They
closed with a rousing "Swing That Music" and a standing
ovation from the audience. They are already signed up for the clubs'
2008 fall festival.  (See picture on page 8.)
Members that have passed were given a tribute by Wayne Vetter.
Alice Hendryx won the 50-50 raffle and Regina Knapp won the American Rag
subscription.
