Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
April 2007
The beautiful weather on Sunday April 29 brought out a large
audience for the club’s jam session.  There was also a good turnout
of musicians and several new faces.
One dark spot was that as the room was being set up, it was
discovered that someone had stolen all the EARLYJAS sound
equipment!  The police investigated and it has not yet been
determined if the Legion has insurance that would cover the loss.
If anyone has equipment they would care to donate, let us know.
It would be greatly appreciated.
The session opened with all the musicians warming up on “Honeysuckle Rose”.
After that, individual sets were organized.  One special event featured “Sister Jean”
Huling on piano and her 12 year old grandson Kenan “Little Laundry” Leslie playing
washboard like a pro.  Their selections were “Stop Time” and “In the Garden”.
Another Musical Moment occurred during one selection when Stan Ebin was playing
kazoo.  He was joined by Bill Smith playing his trumpet mouthpiece and Jim Hronek
with his trombone mouthpiece.  They produced an unusual sound!
Besides Sister Jean and Little Laundry, other musicians were
Piano: Bill Parthe, Jim Emert, Bob Erdman; Banjo/Guitar: Russ Mortus, Ron Benach,
Dave Evans, Dave Marsall, John Silby; Drums: Joe Popchak, Jerry Sanders, Russ
Mortus, Rich Fawcett, Jim Chatterton; Trombone: Jim Hronek, Red Evans; Bass: Mike
Kovach, Al Kinney; Reeds: Eric Cunningham, Aid Harsch, Barrett Taylor, Dave Smith;
Trumpet: Jim Garrison, Bill Smith, Terry Bradley, Stan Ebin.
Some of the tunes were “Angry”, “Indiana”, “Bill Bailey” and “Tin Roof Blues”.
It was a lucky day for the musicians as Aid Harsch won the 50-50 raffle and Jerry
Sanders won the American Rag subscription.
