February 2007
Twenty-one years ago a group of trad jazz fans got together and
formed EARLYJAS. In addition to others the group included Jean
and Paul Huling and Ray Dodds, the clubs' first president.
They were assisted in their efforts by Don Bentley, owner of the Rusty Nail, who provided a
venue for the clubs' meetings and concerts at no charge. Since that time the club has flourished
with the support of existing members and the on-going addition of new members.
In recognition of this event the club held a swinging jam session and anniversary party on
Sunday February 25. Bill Parthe read off a list of names of all the clubs' presidents and a
beautifully decorated cake was enjoyed by everyone. Bill also introduced the new officers
and board members that were installed for the year.
25 musicians kept the party going all afternoon. It was great to see Judd Pecek on the
bandstand with his trombone. Other musicians were trumpet/cornet: Stan Ebin, also
washboard, Al Kinney, John Fridy and Jim Davis. Reeds: Aid Harsch, Barrett Taylor and Mike
Kovach. Trombone: Jim Hronek and Dave Bair. Piano: Bill Parthe, Jeanne Arrendale, Jim Emert
and Bob Erdman. Banjo/guitar: Dave Marshall, Ron Benach, George Dean and Russ Mortus.
Uke: Eileen Freeze. Bass: Lou Kunkel, Kyle Snyder (tuba). Drums: Fred Gilt, Joe Popchak, and
Jerry Sanders. Vocals: Al Kinney, Eileen Freeze, John Fridy and Russ Mortus.
Some Of The favorite tunes Were: "Radio", "Dinah", "Ain't Misbehavin", "Milenburg Joys",
And "Indiana".
It was a fun way to kick off the clubs' twenty- second year. Jim Emert won the 50-50 raffle
and the free American Rag subscription went to Susan Dodge.
