Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
Jam Session-- March, 2006
The EARLYJAS jam session was held on Sunday February 26, 2006.  It was
well attended by both audience and musicians.  More important was the fact
that this Sunday marked a significant milestone in the history of the club.
Twenty years ago, Jean and Paul Huling and several other traditional jazz
fans formed EARLYJAS.  Club meetings were held at the Rusty Nail restaurant
in Kent, OH, thanks to the sponsorship of owner and jazz fan Don Bentley.
As they say, the rest is history.  Through the efforts of many past officers, trustees, and, of
course, our members, the club has prospered and strengthened over those twenty years.
To help celebrate the anniversary, club members enjoyed a beautifully decorated cake.
Seventeen musicians turned out to keep things swinging.  They included: Terry Bradley and
John, Fridy, cornet; Aid Harsch, Gary Kroah, Barrett Taylor and Mike Kovach, reeds; Denny
Smith and Jim Hronek, trombone; Bill Parthe and Jim Emert, piano; Ron Benach, Dave Marshall,
and Russ Mortus, banjo; Smilin’ Kyle Snyder, tuba; Jim Chatterson, Fred Gilt, and Jerry sanders,
drums.  Bill P. and Kyle led a strolling singalong to “When You’re Smiling” and “Side by Side.”
Other tunes included “Radio’, “Bourbon Street Parade”, Nobody’s Sweetheart”, and Olga”.
‘Saints” with the parasol parade was a lively way to  launch the club into the next twenty years.
Judy Shaffer won the 50-50 raffle; the American Rag subscription went to Frances Sampson.
