Lime Lake Jazz Band -- May, 2006
At first glance you might think Lime Lake is a new soft drink.  Actually, it is
the name of a swinging trad jazz band that only plays once a year!
A client of Jim Hronek has a cabin at Lime Lake, Michigan.  He has an annual
party there and several years ago he asked Jim to put a band together for the
party.  Jim contacted Ray Heitger, the leader of the Cakewalkin’ Jazz Band,
and the Lime Lake Jazz Band was born.
The band was a hit with the small but appreciative audience at the EARLYJAS monthly meeting.  Ray
Heitger’s high energy influence is evident in the band’s style.  Unfortunately, a serious leg infection
hospitalized Jim Hronek and he had to miss the gig.
The trombone position was ably filled by Ben Herrick of the Dixie Squids.  In addition to leader and
clarinetist Ray Heitger (who also belted out numerous vocals), the band was Rick Grafling, piano and
vocals; Bob Miller, string bass; Dave Marshall, tenor guitar; and Bill Genson, cornet, vocals.
Some of the crowd’s favorite tunes were She Wants A Big Butter and Egg Man, Hello Central, Give Me
Doctor Jazz, Some of These Days, East Coast Trot, and I’m Confessin’.  The closing tune was ‘’Til We
Meet Again.  Ray’s humorous comments and chatter added even more fun to the afternoon.
Charley Shaffer won the 50-50 raffle.  The free American Rag subscription went to John Townsend.
Charlotte Reid generously donated two hibiscus plants.  They were won by Bill Gienson and Ed Dolbow.
