By Any Measure Jazz Band
Upon entering the hall for the EARLYJAS concert on March 26, you might have
thought you were at the prom by looking at the youthful (with one exception)
tuxedo clad musicians getting ready to play. They were the seven piece By
Any Measure Jazz Band all students at the Cleveland Institute of Music (except
one).
Once they started to play, you could quickly tell this was a group of highly talented
musicians. To the delight of the audience their selections included trad jazz and 1920’s tunes.
The group was formed less than a year ago by Glenn Crytzer who is working on a Master’s
degree in composition at CIM. Glenn plays banjo and cello, sings, composes, and teaches dancing.
It was as a dance instructor that the Multi-talented Crytzer developed an interest in ragtime and
jazz. He noticed that his students enjoyed the foxtrot, Charleston, and similar dances of the 1920’
s. EARLYJAS club members hope that more young people develop such an interest.
Other band members (beside leader Glenn on banjo and 1920’s Russ Columbo style vocals) were:
Jacob Adams, piano; Jesse Miller, tpt; Andrew Welborn, tuba; Tom Pylinski, tbn; Nathan Cook,
dms; and our senior member Ted Witt, clnt. Unfortunately, with the exception of Ted, the
students will be graduating soon and leaving the area to pursue their musical careers.
Shovel”, “Hannah Johnson’s Big Black Ass”, and “Here Comes My Ball and Chain”. Others
included “Dr. Jazz”, Struttin’ with Some Barbecue”, and “Sweet Georgia Brown”.
The dance floor was crowded most of the time. The finale was, of course, the Saints but it was a
refreshingly different version and arrangement. The crowd loved the band and gave them a
standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert.
Joe Popchak won the 50-50 raffle and Art Bayer won the American Rag subscription.
