Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin

October 2005
The EARLYJAS Memorial Concert was held on October 30 to honor those members
who have passed. Rev. John Townsend read the names of each of the deceased
members and asked that they be remembered. He made personal comments about the
members he knew. See the list below.
Members and guests who attended were treated to a superb performance by the HotJazz 7 (actually 8)
although most of the audience were die-hard traditional jazz fans, they recognized and appreciated the fine
musicianship of each band member as they played rags, stomps and blues from the 20's and 30's, as well as
traditional jazz numbers.
The band played from charts to produce a tight, structured, coordinated sound. They also played ensemble
style with some solos. This differs from many trad jazz groups, playing without charts and featuring
spontaneous improvised solos.
It was good to see Marc Berridge able to play trombone again, with splints on both wrists as he recovers
from a road-rage incident. Other band members were: Phil Cartwright, banjo, vocals and announcer; Bill
Parthe, piano; Bill Fuller, drums/washboard; Geoff Polk, clarinet; Jonathon Fairman, tuba; and a West Coast
style 2-trumpet front line consisting of Jack Brndiar and Al Couch. Some of the tunes were "New Orleans
Stomp", “Mojo Strut”, "Antiqua Blues", "Down Home Rag" and "Washboard Wiggles". Some of the more
familiar ones were "Dr. Jazz", "Rampart Street Parade" and the "Charleston". The closing song was the
“Saints”.
Joan Harsch won the 50-50 raffle and the free American Rag subscription went to John Townsend.
