Music Makers -- by Bill Irvin
|
The EARLYJAS club jam session was held on November 27 at the American
Legion in Hudson, OH. It got off to a rocky start when all 27 musicians
assembled to play a warm-up session. It was quite discordant and it seemed
those off-key played louder than the rest on “Margie” and “Bill Bailey.”
Fortunately, the jam session smoothed out as smaller groups performed throughout the
afternoon. Some of the selections heard were “Georgia On My Mind”, “I’m Confessin’”,
“Indiana”, “Bourbon Street Parade”, and “Louisiana Fairy Tale”. Roger Boff played a hot
harmonica solo on “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans”
The musician line-up included Cornet/Trumpet: Terry Bradley, Ed Ballinger, and Roger Boff;
Reeds: Aid Harsch, Barrett Taylor, Gray Kroak, and Mike Kovach; Trombone: Denny Smith,
Dave Bair, Jim Hronek, and Red Evans; Piano: Bill Parthe, Terry Bradley, and Jean Huling;
Banjo/Guitar: Russ Mortus, Dave Evans, Dave Marshall, and Ron Benach; Bass/Tuba: Paul
Huling and Mike Kovach; Drums, Joe Popchak, Jerry Sanders, Rich Fawcett, Fred Gilt, and Jim
Chatterton.
A humorous incident occurred during one of the sets. Bill Parthe, who never dances, made the
mistake of walking across the dance floor on the way back from the bar. Numerous ladies in the
audience “tagged’ him and he danced a few steps with them. It ended when Phil Cartwright cut
in!
All the musicians assembled again to close the session with “Radio” and “Saints”. All in all, it
was a fun afternoon.
Mary Kiko won the 50-50 raffle and the free American Rag subscription went to Joan Harsch.
